Student PDAs

Beginning in the Fall semester of 2009, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) are required for nursing students, starting at the sophomore level. You may use any type of mobile device (e.g. BlackBerry, iPhone/iPod Touch, Palm OS, or WindowsMobile/Pocket PC/Smartphone) you wish as long as you can load the required programs to your mobile device.

If you need to purchase a PDA, you may purchase a Pocket PC (HP iPAQ 210) at a discounted price from CDW-G. Go to this website and log in with your Purdue career account and password to get the discounted rate. You will need also purchase a memory card (minimum 2 GB) to load the required programs. The other items listed in the website are optional.

To purchase the required programs, (from Skyscape), go to this website, log in with your Purdue career account and password, and click on "Purdue Required References Bundle". Choose the correct platform for your device (BlackBerry, iPhone/iPod Touch, Palm OS, or WindowsMobile/Pocket PC/Smartphone) and purchase the required programs.

This bundle includes the following programs: Nursing Constellation Plus, Nursing Diagnosis Handbook, Skyscape 5 Minute Clinical Consult, and Nursing Handbook of Health Assessment. You will use these programs in sophomore level courses (PHPR202, NUR 216/217, NUR 214, and NUR 206/207) and junior and senior level courses. Updates will be sent to your mobile device regularly.

In addition, if you have a Pocket PC or a Palm-based device, you may download the Thomson Micromedex programs (disease, lab, drugs, alternative medicine, etc.) through an agreement negotiated by the Purdue Libraries. NOTE: The Thomson Micromedex programs do not replace the Purdue Required References Bundle programs. To obtain the Thompson Micromedex programs:

  1. Go to this website: http://www.thomsonhc.com/hcs/librarian.
    NOTE: You must do this from an on-campus computer, or on the PAL wireless system. If you are off-campus, you need to connect to Purdue's VPN system first.
  2. Click on the "Handheld PDA" tab at the top, and follow the instructions to register and download.
