Research: Consumer use of dietary supplements

Dr. Thorlton researches safe and efficacious consumer use of performance enhancing substances, with a special interest in dietary supplements and herbal ingredients contained in energy drinks. Her research describes health and behavioral outcomes occurring with consumption of stimulant containing products and their associated clinical implications. Through data mining and quantitative analyses of large national datasets (e.g., Youth Risk Behavior Survey; Drug Abuse Warning Network; and the National Health Interview Survey), she seeks to identify personal, environmental, and behavioral factors that predict outcomes associated with performance enhancing substance use across the USA.  She actively collaborates with faculty in the Purdue University College of Pharmacy, examining ingredients contained in popular energy drinks, and with the School of Communications, on survey instrument development and delivery. She mentors nursing students and teaches courses in Health Policy, Evidence Based Practice, Advanced Pathophysiology, and guest lectures in the College of Pharmacy Complementary & Alternative Medicine course.
