R.N. to B.S Program

The Purdue School of Nursing has a R.N. to B.S. program for students who are already registered nurses and wish to obtain their B.S. in Nursing. To be considered for admission to Purdue University's RN to BS program, an applicant must be a graduate of an NLN accredited associate degree or diploma nursing program with a GPA of 3.00 or above. Admission is limited and competitive for all students.

Prior to submitting an application, potential students must meet with an academic advisor in the Office of Student Services to review their transcripts and to discuss the curriculum requirements. A meeting with the RN to BS program director should follow the meeting with the academic advisor.

Application/Admissions Process

To make a formal application to the School of Nursing, using the Application for Admission to the School of Nursing, R.N. to B.S. form and the Supplemental Application form.

The deadline for applications for the Fall semester is April 15th. The deadline for applications for the Spring or Summer semester is October 15. Incomplete applications will not be considered for admission.

Applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Students must have their previous degree transcript reviewed by a School of Nursing advisor prior to being considered for admission. The applicant is responsible for verifying that the School of Nursing has received all materials. Address any questions to (765) 494-4042.

Applications will not be considered until all the required documents have been received.

The School of Nursing Admissions Committee will do an initial screening of the candidates.

Chosen candidates will be interviewed.

An additional student fee will be required.

Your acceptance as an R.N. to B.S. student at Purdue University School of Nursing is influenced by many factors. Specifically, the Admissions Committee is guided by the following:

  1. GPA
  2. Essay
  3. References
  4. Relevant work experience
  5. Special attributes/abilities

If you are interested in applying to the program, please submit the following documents:

  • Fill out the Application for Admission to the School of Nursing, R.N. to B.S. form and the Supplemental Application form.
  • Request that one official transcript from each school attended be mailed to the School of Nursing.
  • Attach one copy of a statement of approximately 300-500 words concerning your reasons for choosing to complete a B.S. in Nursing.
  • Obtain two recommendations evaluating your scholarly potential, one from your academic institution and one from your place of employment. See Recommendation Form.
  • Attach your updated curriculum vita or resume (with all related work experience listed).
  • A $50 application fee will be required for all students new to Purdue (i.e., who have taken no courses at Purdue). Send check, payable to Purdue University, along with your application materials to the School of Nursing.

Guidelines for Selecting Elective Courses

  1. Humanities elective (3 cr. total) may be selected from any of the following areas: art and design (AD), band (BAND), music (MUS), theater (THTR), dance (DANC), English (ENGL), foreign language (CHNS, FLL, FR, GER, HEBR, ITAL, JPNS, LATN, LING, RUSS, SPAN), history (HIST), political science (POL), religion (REL), communications COM), interdisciplinary studies (IDIS), sign language (ASL), classics (CLCS) or philosophy (PHIL).
  2. Guided Philosophy elective (3 cr.) may be selected from any one of the following courses: PHIL 11100 - Ethics, PHIL 12000 - Critical Thinking, PHIL 15000 - Logic, or PHIL 27000 - Medical Ethics.
  3. Guided Statistics (3 cr.) must be selected from one of the following courses: PSY 50000 - Statistical Methods Applied to Psychology, Education, and Sociology, SOC 38200 - Introduction to Methods of Social Research, STAT 30100 - Elementary Statistical Methods, or PSY 20100* - Introduction to Quantitative Topics in Psychology.
     
    *MATH 15300 or equivalent is a prerequisite for PSY 20100.

Progression Policies

Prior to the first clinical course the following must be completed:

  1. All RN's must have a valid Indiana Registered Nurse License before enrolling in any clinical course.
  2. NUR 33200 must be taken prior to or at the same time as the first NUR clinical course.
  3. In order to receive a baccalaureate degree from Purdue University, students must meet all requirements as identified in the University Regulations. In addition, to earn the B.S. with a major in nursing, a minimum of 32 credit hours at a 300 level and above are required. All R.N. to B.S. curriculum requirements must be met and all progression policies of the School of Nursing will apply.
  4. Courses required in the R.N. to B.S. curriculum cannot be taken on a pass/not pass option.

MyPurdue Degree Evaluation Area Requirements

RN Core Courses: NUR 11000, 20600, 20700, 21400, 31000, 32800, 33200, 40200, 40300, 40400, 40800, 40900, 41000, PSY 12000, PHPR 20200, FN 30300, and PSY 35000.

RN Guided Electives: guided philosophy elective and guided statistics elective.

RN Humanities Elective: a total of three credits from any of the following areas - art & design, music, theater, dance appreciation, English, foreign language, history, philosophy, political science, religion, communications, interdisciplinary studies, sign language and classics.

Upper Division Requirements: To earn a degree, any student must have at least 32 credits at the 30000 level or above taken on campus and for a grade.
