Clinical experience in health care agencies is an integral part of your Purdue Nursing education. The School of Nursing has agreements with over 100 clinical agencies to provide student learning experiences. These agencies include acute-care hospitals, extended-care facilities, residential outpatient psychiatric facilities, and community-based health agencies. Most of the clinical facilities lie within a 70-mile radius of the West Lafayette campus.
Every year, under the direct supervision of a Purdue Nursing faculty member, a select group of senior public health nursing students complete their clinical experience at a reservation through the Indian Health Service. In addition, nursing students and faculty have participated in summer study-abroad programs in Norway and England.
Purdue sponsors a wellness program for active and retired University faculty and staff. The program includes health fairs, which are conducted by faculty, staff, and students of the Nursing Center for Family Health. These health fairs screen employees to identify existing or potential health problems. Participating in the wellness program provides nursing students with the opportunity to gain experience in health promotion activities. The fairs are offered at sites throughout the campus to be easily accessible to all Purdue employees. Ultimately, they should improve the health of Purdue employees, leading to a better, more conditioned work force.
