Academic Advising and CounselingStudents are assigned an academic counselor for their entire program. Students work with counselors to determine a plan of study and seek advisement with any academic questions or challenges. Advisors assist in planning schedules and must approve the courses that students select at registration. Advisors also have information about schedules, electives, and course requirements. Academic advisors link students to extracurricular activities within the School of Nursing, Purdue University, the greater Lafayette Community, and beyond. Printed materials are available on a wide variety of subjects including nursing career opportunities, taking the NCLEX examination, post-graduate opportunities, other schools on campus, and student services available on campus. A bi-weekly E-Newsletter keeps students up-to-date on schedules, activities, deadlines, scholarships, meetings, and other events. The staff in the Office of the Dean of Students also is available to offer assistance with personal or academic challenges. Students are encouraged to seek assistance as soon as the need is recognized. Job PlacementSchool of Nursing graduates have an excellent job placement record. An annual Nursing Career Fair provides nursing students the opportunity to meet prospective employers. In addition, the University Placement Service sponsors an annual Health Careers Day. Workshops held during the year help students prepare resumes, develop interviewing techniques, marketing skills, and pursue optimal career placement. The School of Nursing maintains career opportunities and graduate nursing program information. Nursing Student OrganizationsThe Student Services Office personnel support the student nursing organizations in clerical, advisory, and leadership roles. Outside of the Student Services office, each student group has it's own bulletin board to post important information about upcoming events and current activities. Student groups are highlighted in the Purdue Nurse. |
